We read "I Wanna Iguana" as a class and discussed different things that we might want. Students wrote a journal where they identified something they wanted and someone they had to convince. The Writer's "I"
Writer's Notebook Entry #13 The fourth section in your Writer's Notebook is the "Writer's "I". It is one page long. In this section your should have drawn a large capital letter "I" as in the example below. Inside the "I", you need to write down everything that you can think of that you know something, anything about. For example, I know something about Shotokai Karate, swimming, scuba diving, Wyoming, Ecuador, Bruce Lee, being in a kid bicycle gang, and rock climbing (see the example below). For this journal entry, you are to pick one thing off your list and write about a personal experience that you have had with it. For example, I might write about the first time I ever practiced martial arts. I could explain how I went from studio to studio with my dad and the things that we experience and how I finally chose a place to begin studying martial arts. |

As you read the article, make annotations in the margin where you ask questions about or point out the author's bias, or what he or she leaves out of the article. First, choose a specific writer's strategy. Then annotate both articles on student tracking according to that writer's strategy. After annotating both articles, create a thesis, or a statement of opinion where you take a side on the issue addressed in the articles. Make this thesis the title of a journal in your writer's notebook (Next clean page in the first section). Next, write a paragraph where you use your annotations to help support your thesis for the first article. Then do the same for the second article. Make sure that you do not make a list of your annotations. You need to write an analysis where you describe the meaning behind your annotation and how they connect to your thesis.
