A theme is a universal message, or a lesson that you get out of a text. You will need to identify a theme for this assignment.
Part 1Look at the illustration above and in your thought notebook write about what it takes to develop ideas.
Part TwoLook at the examples of genius note-taking below. What in the pictures tell you that the author took time in their note-taking? Write a few possible answers in your thought notebook. You do not need to understand what is being said to answer this question. I want you to look more at the structure than at the information.
Class focus below
I want to see your answers, so don't just write down what I have written here ;-)
One of the many things that theses notes have in common is that they are organized in a way that makes sense to the author and others. If you know the language or the subject that they are writing about, you can understand what they are saying. One way to incubate our ideas is to take the time to organize them into some kind of structure. Part 3How do you organize thoughts? By looking at patterns, connection, and themes. How you do this depends largely on what you want to do with the information. For example, if you want to compare and contrast information, you might use the following graphic organizer - don't scream please :-)
I personally don't like the Venn Diagram and prefer to organize information that I am comparing and contrasting with a table.
I will never make you use a particular graphic organizer. You can either google for organizers (search: compare and contrast organizers for what is already out there), or you can create one of your own. I had students use all types of images to organize information. Here are some examples
Part 4You will be comparing and contrasting three texts. You need a graphic organizer to do that. Make one or print one off now.
Make sure to pause the video or stop reading to write down your thoughts in the graphic organizer. Remember Text + Coping does not equal notes. Text + Thoughts = Notes Text 1Text 2 -The book is in Mr. Gillis' room, or you can watch the youtube video.
Write one theme shared between these two texts.
