The presenter explained that they were learning about Alfred Blalock and Viven T. Thomas. Thomas was a young African American that wanted to become a doctor but because of his race, he spent most of his time as a carpenter. Blalock was a white surgeon who recognized Thomas's ability and desire and made him a surgical assistant. The class discussed racial tensions and the amazing operation that helped solve blue baby syndrome. One of the little girls raised her hand and asked, "Where there more white babies or black babies saved by this operation?" They started to research that question and found that few black babies benefited from the operation, but they don't know why. My guess is that is was because of discrimination.
I wonder how Thomas felt, saving so many white children when there were many African American children who needed treatment.
